PhotoHunt
FLAGS
Once again I was scratching my head about this one. It seems I don’t take photos of flags. But then I suddenly thought of the perfect idea for this theme, although I’m afraid I had to scan in these very old photos (taken in 1984) and they could do with some “editorial” help if only I was good at that.
These photos were taken in Siena at the running of the Palio di Siena which I wrote about so long ago. It is a horse race between the various contrade (zones) of Siena, taking place twice each year since the 1600s and the prize is the Palio, a banner which hangs in the clubrooms of the winner.
Before the race there is a parade with everyone in period costume, and many carry the flags of their contrada. We have a close friend from Siena and he belongs to the Istrice contrada, or Hedgehog contrada and this is their flag above.
Well this is not exactly a flag but it is flag like and it is the banner which was made for the Palio we attended in 1984.
HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND EVERYONE

Interesting that, like you, I got to realizing that I don't take too many pictures of flags — and, also, like you, I ended up going with something festive!

That must have been a fun event and good thing you have photos as part of your memories

Oh well done choosing the Palio for this week! Perfect!
Have you seen the mini series from the book by John Mortimer, Summer's Lease? Great Palio scene there.
I love Siena and have been there several times.

I have always been fascinated with the banners carried in religious processions and also in the ones carried by labour organizations and unions. I wish I lived somewhere where I could get photos of either. They just don't do that, here….

Old photo's or not, they are great, and show some great customs. Whatever name you call them, banners or flags.. they all do the same thing.

Our Chinese festivals use lots of flags in the celebrations too.
Happy weekend!

what are you talking about, that was an awesome find! As I thought mine was while I was watching the other parade.. To know you have seen that really is impressive (not sure why I say that)..
Thanks for racking your head and finding something very impressive!

Those are very colourful ones. This was one of the easier themes for me

Excellent photos, old or not. I've never been in Siena for the Palio – this was almost as good!

Good Take on the idea JMB.
It looks like BBC TV unwittingly followed your theme… If anyone watched any of the Glastonbury festival (Like the Springsteen set) did you notice all the colourful and sometimes inventive flags in front of the main stage?
